Concussion Care

Sport-related concussion has become a major public health concern among participants of all ages. Additionally, it is well established that concussions tend to go underreported in youth sports, and this stems, in part, from a lack of knowledge of both the signs and symptoms of a concussion and the proper management of the injury.

Our clinic has become certified in the Shift Concussion Management Program (www.shiftconcussion.ca): a full-service concussion management program supporting baseline testing, post-injury care, return-to-play preparation, education, and prevention strategies.

Services include:

Comprehensive Baseline Assessment, It is recommended every athlete 10 years and older be screened. Includes:

  • Computerized neurocognitive testing (ImPACT® – the most widely used and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system)
  • Postural Stability/balance assessment
  • Screen of visual coordination skills

Post-injury Assessment and Injury Management:

  • Injury education, home instruction, academic accommodations and resting strategies
  • Vestibular assessment and rehabilitation strategies
  • Manual therapy and physical rehabilitation for related MSK disorders

Supervised, Physical Exertion Testing:

  • For a safe and gradual return-to-play (in accordance with the Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport held in Zurich, 2012)

Concussion education seminars and resources for players, parents, trainers and coaches

Education is a vital component to the prevention and proper management of this injury. Its about reaching out to all those affected: players, parents, researchers, coaches, trainers, officials, administrators, and healthcare providers. It will require a village approach to change the current mindset and provide a safer playing environment for today's youth.
