Dry Needling (IMS or IMT)

Dry needling, also referred to as intramuscular stimulation (IMS) and/or intramuscular therapy (IMT).

Dry needling is a specialized treatment for trigger points provided by some Physiotherapists. Dry needling is a treatment that involves a solid, sterile filament needle being pushed through the skin to stimulate a trigger point. It is one possible treatment option, usually combined with other techniques including exercises, to manage myofascial pain.

Dry needling does not focus on the Chinese meridians (as it does in acupuncture) but rather focuses on stimulating altered or dysfunctional structures to:

  • Decrease pain
  • Improve quality of movement
  • Increase range of movement

Your Physiotherapist can perform a thorough evaluation to help determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment as part of a program designed to reduce your pain and improve your function.
